Hummingbirds have the ability to add color to an environment. This is why some people love to have them in their gardens or close their windows. If you want to attract hummingbirds to your home you must be willing to feed them; they can be attracted by flowers and other brightly colored objects. However, if you want to have quite a number of them, you would need to get hummingbird feeders, and these feeders need to have food in them.

Hummingbird Food

Hummingbirds feed on nectar, and most at times when you go to the supermarket to purchase this nectar you would discover that they are a bit pricey. If you want to keep having a constant flow of hummingbirds, you may not be able to afford buying nectar for them every day. Because of this reason many people have taken to preparing hummingbird nectar at home because it is more cost effective. So how do you make your own hummingbird food?

Materials required

  • 2 Cups of water
  • 1/2 cup of white sugar
  • Stove
  • Pot
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Wooden spoon

These are the basic things that you would need. Also the food coloring should be preferably red if you want to add it to the mix.

Directions

  1. Add water to the pot and place it on the stove. Leave it for a few minutes until it begins to boil. This process is carried out in order to eliminate any form of bacteria or germs that is in the water that may harm the bird.
  2. While the water is boiling, you add 1/2 cup of sugar into it and stir it properly using the wooden spoon. Make sure that the sugar is evenly distributed and does not clump in one place as this will affect the taste of the food.
  3. When you are done stirring, remove the pot from the stove and add 2 drops of the food coloring if you desire and stir it properly. Addition of food coloring is not compulsory; it is optional. The aim is to add color to the food so that it can attract the hummingbirds. However, some people say that even clear liquid attracts them as long as the feeder is colored.
  4. Allow the mixture to cool and then transfer to the hummingbird feeder. Depending on the size of the feeder you can fill it up so that it can last a day at least.
